Saint Nicholas' Day, observed on December 6 in Western Christian countries, December 5 in the Netherlands and December 19 in Eastern Christian countries, is the feast day of Saint Nicholas. It is celebrated as a Christian festival with particular regard to his reputation as a bringer of gifts, as well as through the attendance of Mass or worship services. In Europe, especially in "Germany and Poland, boys would dress as bishops begging alms for the poor."

In Ukraine, children wait for St. Nicholas to come and to put a present under their pillows provided that the children were good during the year. Children who behaved badly may expect to find a twig or a piece of coal under their pillows. In the Netherlands, "Dutch children put out a clog filled with hay and a carrot for Saint Nicholas' horse. On Saint Nicholas' Day, gifts are tagged with personal humorous rhymes written by the sender." In the United States, one custom associated with Saint Nicholas Day is children leaving their shoes in the foyer on Saint Nicholas Eve in hope that Saint Nicholas will place some coins on the soles, for them to awake to.

Could Be Halloween

Yowling, prowling, growling cat
Why do you switch your tail like that?
Why do your eyes flash gold and green?
Could be--must be--Halloween!

Slinky, inky, blinky cat,
Why do you arch your back like that?
What scary creatures have you seen?
Could be--must be- Halloween!

The Goblin

There's a goblin as green
    as a goblin can be.
Who is sitting outside
    and is waiting for me.
When he knocked on my door
    and said softly, "Come play!"
I answered,"No thank you,
    now please,go away!"
But the goblin as green
    as a goblin can be.
Is still sitting outside
    and is waiting for me.

Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat!
Give me something good to eat.
Give me candy. Give me cake.
Give me something good to take.

Halloween Symbols – What do They Mean?

We associate Halloween with different symbols such as skulls, witches and bats. What do these symbols mean and why are they so popular during the Halloween season? Read on to find out.

Bat
Bats are nocturnal creatures that are typically associated with Halloween. In the movies, we also see some bats transform into vampires. Of course, this doesn’t happen in real life. However, there is a type of bat known as the vampire bat, which is the only mamal known to feed on blood. According to superstitous beliefs, death is on its way when a bat circles a house 3 times.
Jack-O-Lantern
The Jack-O-Lantern is another common symbol we see during Halloween. Pumpkin carving has been a tradition for many years. The vibrant orange symbolizes life and positive change. The Jack-O-Lantern got its name from an Irish legend. A drunk man named Jack always played tricks on everyone. On one instance, he played a trick on the devil and the devil placed a curse on him. When Jack died, he was not allowed to enter heaven because he was a mean person. He wasn’t able to enter hell, too since the devil wouldn’t let him. The devil game him a burning ember, which he then placed inside a hollow turnip. From then on, he was known as Jack-O-Lantern.
Witch
From way back, witches have always been known as supernatural beings. This is the perfect symbol for Halloween since unseen energies are said to be the strongest during this season. Witches are also called when there are messages from unseen forces that need to be interpreted.
Black Cat
Most people associate black cats with bad luck. However, in some parts of the world, black cats are considered good luck. The color black also means mystery, and in this case, magic!
Skull
The skull serves as a reminder that life is not eternal, and after death, we shall all return back to the earth. It also symbolizes death and danger.

When is Halloween 2017?
Halloween falls every year on October 31, which is a Tuesday this year - that's tomorrow!
It is held the day before All Saints’ Day, which is a Christian festival used to celebrate recognised saints.
Halloween activities typically involve trick or treating and dressing up in fancy dress.
Why is the date of Halloween significant?
The word Halloween comes from Hallowe’en, meaning “hallowed evening” or holy evening.
It is widely thought that Halloween traditions came from Celtic harvest festivals of Samhain, although some people support the view that Halloween began independently as a Christian festival.
Samhain was a celebration of the end of the harvest season, and means "summer’s end."
People at this time thought the walls between worlds were thin and spirits could pass through into our realm, and it was feared they may damage crops for the next season.
To appease any spirits, gaels would set up places at their dinner tables for the spirits and light bonfires to scare off evil spirits.
How can you celebrate Halloween?
There are a number of ways to celebrate the festival, whether you want to go out or enjoy it from the comfort of your home.
These include:
·         playing apple bobbing
·         carving pumpkins
·         playing pranks
·         dressing up in fancy dress at a costume party
·         going trick or treating
·         watching horror films
·         telling scary stories
·         visiting "haunted" attractions

·         some Christians attend church services

TEACHER'S DAY

Teachers' Day is a special day for the appreciation of teachers, and may include celebrations to honor them for their special contributions in a particular field area, or the community in general.
The idea of celebrating Teachers' Day took root in many countries during the 19th century; in most cases, they celebrate a local educator or an important milestone in education (for example, Argentina has commemorated Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's death on 11 September since 1915, while India traditionally celebrates Guru Purnima, an Indian and Nepalese festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers which is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July) as it is known in the Hindu calendar of India and Nepal. The birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5 September) is also celebrated as Teacher's Day in India since 1962. This is the primary reason why countries celebrate this day on different dates, unlike many other International Days.

A Teacher Is..
Someone who is wise...
Who cares about the students and wears no disguise.
But is honest and open and shares from the heart.
Not just lessons from books, but life where you are.
A teacher takes time to help and tutor.
With English or Math or on a Computer.
It's who's patient, even in stress.
Who never gives less than the very best!

W. Shakespeare

W. Shakespeare is a very famous English writer. He is well-known all over the world. And he was not only a writer, he also was the greatest poet and dramatist. This man was born in a small English town of Stratford-on-Avon. He grew up in a large family of eight brothers and four sisters, but many of them died very young. He wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and 2 poems. And he had his own theatre. The name of that theatre was "The Globe".

1. •For us students, studying English could be a big help in many ways. It benefits our lives by improving our knowledge to a large extent, helping us to improve our grammar and to be more confident in communication.
2. In studying English, it is more useful in boosting one’s vocabulary and using it in a precise way and writing skills. The more they study, the more valuable information they pick up, then they are able to have a solid core of knowledge.
3. One example of learning English is reading books, it is one way of relaxing your mind from one very tiring day, and it is also very convenient.
4. When you get interested in reading, you could avoid addicting online games or violent films which is not good for the development of each individual especially for teenagers.
5. It enables you to be sure of what you are going to say because you have just the right information with you.
6. Learning English is also important in business matters, it is the primary language of business throughout the world. Most international business transactions, including emails, memos, reports, and contracts are written in English.
